Plant Medicine Traditions from Bahama Village Residents
Date: Thursday, January 15th, 2009Our neighbors who came from the Bahamas, Cuba and Haiti brought with them a rich and practical knowledge of local plants for healing. In the 1800’s, and much of the 1900’s, when you got sick in Key West, you went to the neighbor who knew the local plants, where to find them, how to prepare them and how to use them. Often, special foods and prayers were part of the healing. Several local residents, including Iona Gunn, Rosetta Allen, Coine Kravitz and others, will share the remedies they’ve used for decades for family and friends.
In her practice, Constance Miller uses some of the plants from the Key West Botanical Garden that grow in Key West and the Caribbean rim.
Herbal Approach to Immune Dysfunction
Date: Thursday, January 22nd, 2009Our continuing tradition of plant medicine can help keep us healthy by correctly using herbs for the Immune System. Herbs are at the forefront of each of these steps: prevention; building for attacking invaders; outwitting them; resolving lingering symptoms; and cleaning out infectious detritus so healthy cells can grow.
Nature has given us healing plants. Herbal formulas to address colds-flu-strep; immune depletion; allergies and autoimmune disease will be covered in a handout.
Herbal Therapies for Depression, Anxiety, Anger, Fear, Insomnia and STRESS
Date: Thursday, January 29th, 2009Chronic and situational stress takes a huge toll on both mental and physical health.
Herbal formulas, created for each person’s unique challenges, can be extremely effective in preventing damage from ongoing stress. Herbs can protect and help you cope; they can help you sleep; relieve anxiety and worry; lift your spirits; clear mental fog; lessen grief; center you, and help clear physical discomforts caused by stress – such as nervous indigestion. And herbs rarely have side effects, nor are they addictive.
