A Key West Tropical Forest & Botanical Garden Event

Science Fair

Sunday, December 20, 2 - 4 pm

Duke University master degree students and Key West High School students will proudly present their week long research projects this Sunday Dec 20th from 2PM- 4PM at the Key West Tropical Forest and Garden, 5310 College Road, Stock Island. In case of inclement weather, the fair will be held in the Toppino Nature Chapel.

Now in its eighth year, Duke University, is partnering with the Key West Tropical Forest and Botanical Garden to assist the Garden with research projects that produce exciting information for our community and visitor. Under the direction of Professor Stuart Pimm P.H.D, world conservationist and Doris Duke Chair, twenty four master degree candidates have been researching this week at the Garden. They include international students who comes Japan, China and Nigeria.

There is also another exciting dynamic to this program. For the past 3 years, local high school students have been invited to participate in tandem with master degree students.

“This program offers high school students a taste of what college is about and the exploration process. It also gives them an opportunity to ask questions about college life and hear why students from all over the world are continuing their education and focus the on the environment.” said Carolann Sharkey, Executive Director of the Garden.

“We all have someone or something we can remember that influenced our decisions about education and careers. Our goal with this program is just that, entice them to think about the bigger picture and give them the confidence to believe they can achieve anything they set their minds to! If they can have the opportunity to see others who have made that leap and then decide they can do it also, then we have done our job with this program.” “ We are so grateful to the community businesses who help to support this wonderful event.”

The public is invited to see their work at a science fair this Sunday, Dec 20th, 2PM- 4PM. Free parking. For more information call 305-296-1504.
